Making Alfalfa!

So here is the great thing about growing alfalfa. You don't need soil. You just need a mason jar and a tablespoon of alfalfa seeds.

Day 4:

Day 5:

Day 6:

The results are delicious and the flavour is incredible! Tres Bon!

Water

Water is a vital part of all forms of life. So when I read about the Japan earthquake disaster in 2012 and of the outpour from Fukishima. This lead me to think about the purity of my own drinking water.
In NYC the water system is formed with old pipes. A Brita filter would not be able to filter out all the metallic compounds found in the water. So we looked at replace our water filtration system which incorporated a "Reverse osmosis" system.

I try to drink 3 liters of water a day if possible so its important to ensure you are drinking the best water as possible.

One of the contenders is Kinetico system by Aqualife. It has a perchlorate guard. Perchlorate is a by-product which is known to cause thyroid issues.

So this is what we got installed

Picture 1: on the left is a glass of normal tap water. The indicator, shows there are 46 toxins in the water (it should only read 2). This includes, metals, chemicals etc.

Picture 2: On the right is water from my new kinetico water system. Showing that there are just 6 chemicals in the water.

I'm pretty happy with the reduced numbers. I've been told that after 10 days the number will go down as the system gets used a bit more.

A week later and my skin has cleared up on its own thanks to the filter on the showerhead.

Corn

So in addition to regular herbs and vegetables. I have decided to buy some organic corn. Some of these kernels are yellow or blue. So I am excited to see what the results are.

Corn is also one of the fastest growing as well. It's amazing how fast they grow even after 3 days of planting

Day 3:

Day 5:

Day 6: wow I can't believe how fast it's growing!

Why start an organic non-GMO garden?

After living in 4 countries and finally landing in the New York. I noticed small health issues accrue when I moved to the United States from Europe.
It started with getting hypothyroidism once I moved to New York from Zurich, Switzerland.
After trial and testing various synthetic drugs to assist my thyroid, it seemed ridiculous to me that I would have to ingest chemicals in order to assist a deficit in my Iodine intake.

So what was different from my diet in Switzerland to New York? Well, nothing much had changed, just the quality of food was greatly diminished.

So after researching and speaking to lots of women around New York. It was clear to me that the occurrence of hypothyroidism in the USA was very high. About every second woman i spoke to had Hypothyroidism.
So what was the difference between living in Europe and New York? After extensive research, lots of things were pointing to GMO related foods. With GMO's presently being banned in Europe and GMO's are practically in every food here, it was clear to me, that this was one of the causes of the health issues I was experiencing.

So after spending lots of money in health food stores and not feeling too sure about whether GMO's had crept into the food at all. I decided to control things a bit better myself. I decided to start my own non-GMO garden at home.

So for those who have ever lived in NYC, will know that we are not granted a lot of space when it comes to apartments.
I looked around for something affordable, appealing and design smart. I found Urbio! Magnetic pots that can be mounted onto magnetic wall panels and appliances like your fridge.

Ref: www.myurbio.com

And you can buy them here: www.containerstore.com

Using EcoScraps, Organic soil that I found from my local Hardware store. I refuse to use Miracle-grow which is affiliated with GMO's.

There are a few reasons why I started the organic kitchen project:
1) Better control over the foods I ingest
2) Eliminates expensive food costs
3) There's something fun about growing your own plants and vege's.

So after looking around I found this website "Seeds Now" to purchase all my non-GMO seeds and starter kits, super easy and very inexpensive, you can grab a variety of packets for 99c. If you like them, then you can also purchase bigger packs on the next order.

https://seedsnow.refersion.com/l/bdf.10936

So this is what I purchased in my first order.
Alfalfa, spinach, parseley, beets, carrot, beans, peppers, chives, wheatgrass, tomato, sage and dill.
I am all about alfalfa, its easy to grow, you don't need soil and in a week, you can eat all the alfalfa you could ever want.

So as summer goes by and the plants grow. I will be posting updates on the quality of the vegetables and the state of my health.

So my Purchase:

Urbio set + EcoScraps organic Soil + non-GMO seeds from Seeds Now
$120 (for a set of 4) + $12 + $10 = $142
